BEAST OF THE WEEK:

Danny Rothwell!!

I would like to give my personal opinion and say that I thought Danny had one of the best weekends I have ever seen him play.  Some of the saves that he had were incredibliy impressive.  There were two saves in particular in the second game that you would have thought golden goals for the other team, but Danny put both of those in his hands to stave off the opposing team.

Crossroads of America Bracket Champions!!

KICK in the Bluegrass 2009 Champions!!

I must say that I was a little unsure of what to expect going into our first ever college showcase tournament.  I knew that the competition would be tougher than what we were used to playing.  I wondered if the boys would be intimidated by playing against premier teams from all over the region .  But, everyone of the boys came to play and had good games.  I do not think there was one kid out there who did not play well.  You could tell they all wanted to win.  And- once again the boys were able to prove that with hard work comes reward!

Our first game was one of the best games I have seen our team play.  We were crisp and fast on the ball.  The boys were possessing and passing the ball the way we all knew they could play.  The Force from Michigan was a good team, but we were better and pulled out a 2-1 victory!  Our second game of the day did not quite go as well as our first.  After a 6 hour lay over in between games, the kids seemed a little slow out of the gate.  The Hammer FC Classics out of Cincinnati had the game we had earlier in the day.  They were a little quicker to the ball and overall possesed the ball better than we did.  Despite some absolutely wonderful saves by Danny in the goal, we were upset 3-1.  Luckily the boys did not dwell on what had transpired the night before and rallied for Sunday's game.  After game time and field changes, being lost among a sea of triathalon runners and drizzeling rain- the team was ready to take on the Sport from Ft. Wayne, Indiana.  A chance to play on the turf at the local high school was one the team was excited about.  Much like Saturday morning, the boys came prepared to play!  With shortened halves due to the impending weather we put our nose to the grindstone and our boot to the ball.  Playing with a much better game of possession and with speed we managed to top the Sport for a 2-1 win.

Next came the waiting game.  There was one more game after ours to determine who was the winner of our mini bracket in the tournament.  However, due to the increase in rain no one wanted to stick around and watch the next match.  However, by the time we all drove home the results were in.  We were the ONLY team in our bracket to win two games over the weekend which gave us the bracket win!!  Further more, we impressively ranked 8th out of 23 in the overall standings for the U16 boys division!!  Another job well done boys, well done.

I look forward to seeing what the boys will do next at the Nike Challenge Cup in Dublin, Ohio this weekend!

Congratulations to Alex Seither and Noah Wiersema for making the State ODP team!!
